Leaving America

June 20th, 2007

Yeah, I know, the title of the blog is “Finding America” and here i am, leaving the States and heading into Canada.  Wrong way dummy!!  But I’ll be back.  I’m so close to Nova Scotia and wanted to see it by motorcycle. I have never been to the Cabot Trail and want to do that before I head west.

I took the Cat high-speed ferry in the morning (high-speed = 45 mph).  It was a nice 3, or so, hours. Kinda like flying – no bumps – just that little feeling of vertigo when you walk around.  They even have “in-flight” movies.  The ship’s nice – it has a gift shop, restaurant, snack bar, and slot gambling.  I spent most of that short trip meeting and talking to people on thier own vacations and adventures. Here’s a photo of David and Micky from Detroit.  They’re taking a couple weeks to see Nova Scotia and then head back down the east coast of the US to visit Newport, RI before heading home.

The coast line of Nova Scotia is beautiful — but almost too familiar… looks like Maine to me.  I was hoping for something a little different.  I found it in Shag Harbor.  It doesn’t look any different that the other dozens of fishing villages that you pass through – but it has a unique past… 1967 UFO Crash Sight … think i’m kidding, look it up.  They also have a very cool museum (Chapel Hill Museum) which essentially reminded my of a giant high-school project.  They have an eclectic collection of artifacts from around the area (including a box full of deformed lobster claws — of course).  My tour guides, Kelly Clarkson and Clay Aiken (also referred to as:Chastity and Renee) were happy and enthusiast to show me around.

Well, it’s late now and i just settled in at the campground – Rissers Beach Provincial Park.  Nice place, right on the beach — this place will be “home” for the next 2 days…

  1. You mention the sameness of these small towns, and I know what you mean. However, I’m if perhaps it’s not so much that these places are all the same, but that we’re just not taking the time to look of the differences — the uniqueness of every village and cove.

I’m glad to see you did take the time to discover what makes Shag Harbor different than Anytown USA, er… Canada.
